Good Evening.

Moderator says (2004-11-1119:57:39):
My name is Dr. Brown and I am the Moderator of this live event with Dr. Gage.
Good Evening Dr. Gage

Moderator says (2004-11-11 20:6:56):
Dr. Gage, I will take the initiative to open up the discussion with a few questions.

Moderator says (2004-11-11 20:7:50):
Has obesity always been your interest or did you kind of discover it during your practice?
Dr. Gage What do we need to do as parents to help alter our school lunch programs?

kathryn1 says to (2004-11-11 20:8:33):
Dr. Gage What do we need to do as parents to help alter our school lunch programs?

Dr. Gage says to (2004-11-11 20:8:41):
I was trained at St.-Luke's Roosevelt Hospital where we had lots of research and grant money to investigate obesity as a disease.
My training there helped me become an expert in this field.

Dr. Gage says to (2004-11-11 20:9:42):
Parents must take control of their schools through PTA meetings and other grass root actions to tell Administrators that their childs' health is more important than vending machine revenues.

biggurl says to (2004-11-11 20:10:30):
what do you think is the reason our country has gotten so much heavier in the past few decades? I am worried about my kids

Dr. Gage says to (2004-11-1120:12:27):
The number of obese adults has doubled. This is a social epidemic. It is the combination of attitudes towards food and diminishing physical activity that is creating havoc. There is an abundance of junk foods out there commercially being thrown out to our kids. Our kids also have become lazy couch potatoes falling victim to TV and video games.

LuckyK says to (2004-11-1120:13:17):
Dr. Gage, how do you know when you are morbidly obese?

kathryn1 says to (2004-11-1120:13:23):
Dr. Gage, Is there a difference between organic foods and dairy products? Are Organic foods better for children because they don't contain growth hormones?

Dr. Gage says to (2004-11-1120:14:21):
Morbid obesity is defined as being 100 pounds overweight or having a BMI (body mass index) of 40 or higher.

Moderator says (2004-11-1120:14:48):
What do you make about all the hormones in foods?

kathryn1 says to (2004-11-1120:15:22):
Dr. Gage, In your opinion how much exercise should a school age child get in a week. My kids have P.E. four times a week Is that enough?

Patsy says to (2004-11-1120:15:24):
Dr. Gage, How can you make your metabolism faster?

kathryn1 says to (2004-11-1120:15:33):
Dr. Gage, In your opinion how much exercise should a school age child get in a week. My kids have P.E. four times a week Is that enough?

Dr. Gage says to (2004-11-1120:15:48):
Growth hormones are not absorbable through a normal intestinal tract since they are amino acids. They are broken down. The quantity of growth hormone absorbed is therefore unmeasurable.

Dr. Gage says to (2004-11-1120:16:56):
The more physical activity a child gets, the better. The thing that is now lacking is: afterschool activities have become sedentary. We used to play outdoor games that burn calories. Now kids sit in front of videos and eat food. This is feeding the epidemic of childhood obesity.

Dr. Gage says to (2004-11-1120:17:40):
The best way to speed your metabolic rate up is to exercise. It will burn calories and also selectively burn the fat calories as the duration of exercise goes beyond thirty minutes.

winniepooh45 says to (2004-11-1120:17:48):
yes i gree! aobut kids. how can we get parents to team up to limit our kids sedentary activities?

Patsy says to (2004-11-1120:18:59):
Dr. Gage: Are there specific food groups that help your metabolism?

Dr. Gage says to (2004-11-1120:20:28):
This is clearly proving the point I make in my book The Thinderella Syndrome that mechanization and a food-rich world has created the obesity epidemic in our children. The Institute of Medicine reported that the rate of childhood obesity has tripled among youngsters age 6-11 and has doubled for those aged 2-5 and 12-19. Overweight and obese children bear near term risks of developing type 2 diabetes and ill health, heart attack or stroke before they are 65.

Patsy says to (2004-11-1120:20:34):
Dr. Gage, Are there, also ,specific foods that help your brain and skin as you age?

kathryn1 says to (2004-11-1120:20:50):
What would you say to a young girls who are thin but concerned about their weight because of all of the pressure about being heavy?

kathryn1 says to (2004-11-1120:21:0):
What would you say to a young girls who are thin but concerned about their weight because of all of the pressure about being heavy?

becky says to (2004-11-1120:21:26):
that is scary. are there any examples of communities getting together to get this under control?

Moderator says (2004-11-1120:21:35):
I would like to thank you for writing your book. Why do you not consider it a 'diet' book?

Dr. Gage says to (2004-11-1120:21:37):
In the Thinderella Syndrome I describe the caloric density of foods. No food has truly 0 calories but the harder your body works to digest and break foods down, the more calories you burn to digest them so high roughage food such as vegetables and whole fruit are best.

becky says to (2004-11-1120:22:40):
are some vegetables better than others?

kathryn1 says to (2004-11-1120:23:9):
At what age can you start to see heart problems in overweight kids?

Dr. Gage says to (2004-11-1120:23:54):
We do not like to set goal weights for our patients. I always talk about a healthy realistic weight. This is not necessarily a statistical goal weight as described in the insurance charts. I tell patients to become healthy with their lifestyle and feel comfortable with it. The weight that they obtain is therefore more realistic.

Dr. Gage says to (2004-11-1120:24:42):
We have seen children 8, 9, and 10 years old with severe breathing problems, sleep apnea, and asthma. This has all disappeared when their weight has come under control.

kathryn1 says to (2004-11-1120:26:1):
What do you see the state governments doing to try to control this growing problem ? It muct be quite a financial burden on them.

Moderator says (2004-11-1120:26:32):
I have a nephew is 10 and weighs over 100 pounds how do I get his parents and him to realize this is a real problem?

*** (2004-11-1120:26:58):Welcome to Live Event Moderated Chat , sharongwaltney !

Moderator says (2004-11-1120:28:30):
Dr. Gage, how can we get politicians to get more involved in weight awareness?

Dr. Gage says to (2004-11-1120:29:12):
According to the Washington Post article: Health Care Squeeze dated Nov1, in 2005, health insurance is expected to cost at least 10 percent more. Small businesses are hit the hardest in offering health coverage to employees. According to the Surgeon General, more than 9 percent of the nations' health care expenditures are directly related to obesity which costs about $117 billion annually. The amount of money to clean up the unhealthy foods in our schools would be far less to our government than the above f

mike4good says to (2004-11-1120:29:21):
So can a child's long term health be affected even if he loses weight at some point? MY 15 year old was overweight for over 5 years but is now normal weight. But we are still VERY worried about what it did to him.

sharongwaltney says to (2004-11-1120:29:24):
Does estrogen have an effect on weight loss in post menopausal women?

mbravo says to (2004-11-1120:29:49):
I live in Virginia and our Govenor just started a weight/obesity awareness campaign.

sharongwaltney says to (2004-11-1120:30:57):
Does estrogen have an effect on weight loss in post menopausal women?

Dr. Gage says to (2004-11-1120:31:40):
I feel the gov't should have an aggressive campaign to reduce obesity just like the anit-smoking campaign. I presently have a letter written to Mayor Bloomberg of NY urging him to encourage businesses to take a proactive role in providing a healthy work place, start an aggressive obesity prevention campaign via the media, such as proviing PSA's on TV, radio, playgrounds, parks, sport complexes on college campuses for the community and subsidizing schools that provide healthy lunches and healthy snacks

Patsy says to (2004-11-1120:32:23):
Dr. Gage: I thing menopause have an effect on weight gain and has nothing to do with estrogen. Is this true?

kathryn1 says to (2004-11-1120:32:32):
I have not yet read your book, I would love to pick up a copy , but what exactly is the "thinderella syndrome"

Dr. Gage says to (2004-11-1120:33:0):
Correcting obesity just like quitting smoking has the individual return to normal health over time. Younger individuals will probably have a completely normal lifestyle.

biggurl says to (2004-11-1120:33:11):
I ive in New York. We need all the help we can get!

Patsy says to (2004-11-1120:34:43):
Dr. Gage: when will you be writing another book?

Dr. Gage says to (2004-11-1120:34:53):
The Thinderella Syndrome is the fantasy world of most individuals who go on fad diets. They believe that weight loss is the answer to their dreams and that somehow magically they will meet their prince charming and live a happy life. Unfortunately just like in the fairytale, people who practice fad diets regain weight, their glass slippers return to rags and they have just yoyo'ed in weight.

mbravo says to (2004-11-1120:35:30):
Do you offer a solution in your book?

mbravo says to (2004-11-1120:35:33):
so what is the real key to losing weght for good,if there is one?

Dr. Gage says to (2004-11-1120:35:53):
Write to your congressman and get petitions signed to demand a change in the unhealthy food environment.

kathryn1 says to (2004-11-1120:36:29):
Let's say you are 50 pounds overweight is there an effective diet to start on to try to lose some of the weight quickly and then move to practicing healthy eating habits and exercise?

*** (2004-11-1120:37:14):Welcome to Live Event Moderated Chat , sharongwaltney !

Dr. Gage says to (2004-11-1120:37:28):
I believe in individualization for weight control. Each person has a different combination of factors causing obesity and therefore the behavioral techniques that I describe in my book can be individualized to each person based on his or her needs. I have tremendous in my practice when patients truly practice these techniques and learn to defend their weight off for an entire lifetime.

LuckyK says to Patsy (2004-11-1120:38:10):
I recently switched my eating habits to eating kid size portions of fast food acoompanied by salads, juice, fruit, or skim milk, is that better?

Dr. Gage says to (2004-11-1120:38:47):
Losing weight for good requires an individual to look at a diet not as just black and white, on and off, which is what most people do, rather, you must learn the grey shades in between and practice these patterns for a lifetime. I say live a diet, don't do one.

Patsy says to (2004-11-1120:38:50):
Dr. Gage: I t has always been easy for me to maintain my weight. what changes as you age? It is not so easy anymore.

Patsy says to (2004-11-1120:39:40):
Lucky K from Patsy. That sounds like a good idea, maybe using smaller dishes too!!

Dr. Gage says to (2004-11-1120:39:40):
Smaller portion size of even lousy foods are better than large portion foods simply because they have less calories, but let's face it, you also want to be healthy and not just thin.

Dr. Gage says to (2004-11-1120:40:24):
You can purchase my book through my website at www.thethinderellasyndrome.com from Amazon.

winniepooh45 says to (2004-11-1120:41:0):
are there any supplements you recommend for women? i hear that some are not as well-absorbed

winniepooh45 says to (2004-11-1120:41:24):
are there any supplements you recommend for women? i hear that some are not as well-absorbed

becky says to (2004-11-1120:42:4):
i also am confused about vitamins

Dr. Gage says to (2004-11-1120:42:23):
It is not your age that causes the problem, but rather your lifestyle. Many of us develop the mid-life bulge because we are busier with work, family, and life stresses which diminishes our ability to eat healthy and continue exercising as when we were young. I was obese as an intern and lost 40 pounds by jogging and eating healthier. I have maintained the same weight for 25 years.

Patsy says to (2004-11-1120:42:26):
Dr. Gage: If you eat properly, why do you have to take vitamins?

Dr. Gage says to (2004-11-1120:43:45):
In my book, I frequently use Metagenics Ultra Meal liquid formulas as a motivator. They are well balanced, soy-based and well absorbed. 75% of my pts. start their diets with an UltraMeal as their motivator. We also encourage many of our pts. to take Iron and Calcium supplements.

becky says to (2004-11-1120:44:34):
Thanks, I will look for them!

sharongwaltney says to Dr. Gage (2004-11-1120:44:51):
Is increasing our intake of fiber beneficial for weightloss?

Dr. Gage says to (2004-11-1120:45:17):
If you eat healthy foods in particular, vegetable products, beans, nuts, and fruit, you will get your full complement of vitamins. When a pt. is on a low calorie diet, I frequently use Metagenics Fem-Multi and Multigenics as a supplement.

mike4good says to winniepooh45 (2004-11-1120:45:44):
would a teenager benefit from reading your book?

Dr. Gage says to (2004-11-1120:46:58):
THe higher the amount of fiber, the more your intestine will work to push through and digest. This requires the burning of calories. Fiber also fills you and decreases your desire for other more caloric foods.

mike4good says to winniepooh45 (2004-11-1120:47:4):

I drink a soy protein shake for breakfast everyday, It has helped me to eliminate carbs for breakfast and I have lost inches from my waist line. Is soy proteion good for you?

Dr. Gage says to (2004-11-1120:47:42):
Absolutely. My 11 yr.old daughter has read my book and has a full understanding of the lifestyle patterns she must practice to maintain a healthy weight.

Dr. Gage says to (2004-11-1120:48:18):
You can buy vitamins on my other website, www.theweightlossdoc.com
mike4good says to winniepooh45 (2004-11-1120:49:33): It is awkward to talk about if your child is a little heavy. so we will try your book. I just hope my daughter doesn't take it i the wrong way.

Dr. Gage says to (2004-11-1120:49:36):
Soy protein in particular is a good source for women as it has Estrogen balancing effect particularly when it is all natural in food. Beware of taking soy concentrated vitamins as they may give you too much Estrogen.

Patsy says to (2004-11-1120:49:43):

What do you make about the insulin/glucagon relationship and the American diet?

becky says to (2004-11-1120:51:34):
yes, should i base my diet on the glycemic index?

Dr. Gage says to (2004-11-1120:51:45):
Simple carbs have certainly been the Achilles heel of the American diet. Insulin surge is up and creates a cycle of craving, eating more carbs, gaining weight, and craving again.

becky says to (2004-11-1120:51:48):
yes, should i base my diet on the glycemic index?

kathryn1 says to (2004-11-1120:52:46):
do you recommend a certain type of exercise plan? I do weight training and not alot of cardio. Is weight traing good?

Dr. Gage says to (2004-11-1120:52:53):
There is no doubt that if you stick with high fiber, low glycemic fruits and vegetables, you will be better off. However realize there is a spectrum of food quality. Even a sweet fruit such as a fig or grapes will be better for you than twinkies.
kathryn1 says to (2004-11-1120:53:12):

1. Is the newest sugar replacement, Splenda, a healthy alternative to sugar? 2. Do any of the sugar alternatives, e.g., nutrasweet, Splenda, etc., give an increased insulin output?

Dr. Gage says to (2004-11-1120:54:15):
Weight training can increase muscle mass and muscles will help burn calories. Aerobic activity will burn calories to a greater extent compared to weight lifting but I recommend a combination of these two, three parts Aerobic to one part weights.

Dr. Gage says to (2004-11-1120:55:19):
Most sweeteners are certainly much less caloric and less Insulin stimulating than pure sugar, corn syrup, fruit based syrups. Though some of these products may have small amts. of Insulin stimulating effect

mike4good says to winniepooh45 (2004-11-1120:56:45):
does Splenda stimulate insulin? use it because its guilt-free

Patsy says to (2004-11-1120:56:53):

Dr. Gage says to (2004-11-1120:57:19):
The best way to maintain your weight off is to practice defensive eating style that I developed and wrote about in my book. All my pts. have a red alert number that will ensure them permanent weight maintenance.

becky says to (2004-11-1120:58:17):
what is that?

kathryn1 says to (2004-11-1120:59:25):
Dr. Gage you have been very informative thank you.

Dr. Gage says to (2004-11-1120:59:26):
Defensive eating style patterns require practicing the very same techniques you develop to lose weight in the first place. I compare it to an army, losing weight is like fighting a battle while defensive eating style still requires the army to be fit and ready to fight, constantly practiciing the very same tactics that would be used in battle.

kathryn1 says to (2004-11-1120:59:33):
