Hello
Dr. Gage says (2005-10-4 20:13:38):
Hello
Weight Awareness: says to (2005-10-4 20:13:39):
Dr. Gage!
Dr. Gage says (2005-10-4 20:13:52):
yes
Weight Awareness: says to (2005-10-4 20:14:19):
We have some people who would like to ask some questions
Weight Awareness: says to (2005-10-4 20:14:34):
Would anyone like to start
Weight Awareness: says to (2005-10-4 20:16:4):
Dr. Gage, can you tell us a bit about any meeting you have been to recently
Dr. Gage says (2005-10-4 20:16:44):
I went to the NAASO Obesity annual scientific conference in Oct. and learned about the latest research studies on obesity.
Weight Awareness: says to (2005-10-4 20:17:24):
NAASO is a National organization that studies obestiy
Dr. Gage says (2005-10-4 20:17:48):
This is the premier organization for the study of obesity in America
Weight Awareness: says to (2005-10-4 20:18:37):
Dr. Gage you have written a book about weight loss, what is special about your book?
*** (2005-10-4 20:19:12):Kmosley lost connection, left the room
Dr. Gage says (2005-10-4 20:19:22):
WE basically talk about not only how to lose weight but to keep it off. State-of-the-art research shows that this is the critical feature
Weight Awareness: says to (2005-10-4 20:19:40):
do you believe in dieting?
Dr. Gage says (2005-10-4 20:19:54):
You live a diet, you don't just do a diet
justmat says to LuckyK (2005-10-4 20:20:15):
I do not believe in dieting
justmat says to LuckyK (2005-10-4 20:20:52):
I think that people have to behavior modify.
justmat says to LuckyK (2005-10-4 20:21:3):
Do you advocate that?
Dr. Gage says (2005-10-4 20:21:45):
The crux of my book is on behavior modification as a mode for permanent weight loss. It is actually the only way that one can permanently keep the weight off
justmat says (2005-10-4 20:21:50):
sorry those ?s are for Dr. Gage
Weight Awareness: says to (2005-10-4 20:22:28):
What do you mean by behavior modify?
Dr. Gage says (2005-10-4 20:23:20):
We change in a step wise fashion various habits in one's everyday lifestyle. For Ie; I can have you slow your pace of eating down by putting your utensils down after each bite. There are many other techniques that are taught in our groups
Weight Awareness: says to (2005-10-4 20:24:30):
What does red alert eating mean?
Dr. Gage says (2005-10-4 20:25:54):
I created a safe zone for patients who have lost weight and are maintaining their weight off, about 3-5% of their weight. The Red Alert number is assigned to patients who go above this amount of weight regain and they come back to my office immediately. This prevents the "yo-yo syndrome".
*** (2005-10-4 20:26:53):Welcome to Dr. Gage and Thinderella Syndrome , Kmosley !
LuckyK says to (2005-10-4 20:27:6):
I have a question
Kitkat says (2005-10-4 20:27:8):
if they loose weight and start to have it come back on, they have to come back to your office
Kitkat says (2005-10-4 20:27:14):
i do not understand
Weight Awareness: says to (2005-10-4 20:27:34):
Please ask all questions, Dr. Gage is here to help.
Dr. Gage says (2005-10-4 20:28:10):
The Red Alert is considered an emergency because so many patients ignore the beginning of regaining weight. At NAASO, Dr. Wing proved in a large study that getting back to patients at this point helps patients maintain weight off and improves the outcome.
LuckyK says to (2005-10-4 20:28:34):
So If I pick a goal weight and say that I won't go more that 10 pounds over that goal weight, will that help prevent yo yo dieting?
Dr. Gage says (2005-10-4 20:29:25):
Absolutely. It is the ability to successfully sound a Red Alert if you go above this buffer zone that is the essence of weight maintenance and prevention of the yo-yo syndrome.
justmat says to LuckyK (2005-10-4 20:29:31):
Do you believe in calories in=calories out?
Dr. Gage says (2005-10-4 20:30:11):
The bottom line is that the change of behavioral events that is taught to our patients is to ensure calorie balance at a successful realistic goal weight.
justmat says (2005-10-4 20:30:44):
what about different types of calories
Dr. Gage says (2005-10-4 20:31:20):
Whether you do the "ice cream diet or pure vegetables" to lose weight, if you have calorie deficit, you will lose weight. Of course, you want to be on a healthy diet.
justmat says (2005-10-4 20:31:28):
i mean types of foods, you know...fat, carbs, protein
Dr. Gage says (2005-10-4 20:32:33):
The more fiber foods have, the less one eats in total calories. For example, in one study when soy fiber was added to a food unknown to patients, the patient group that had the soy fiber ate less calories therefore complex carbohydrate, bulky type foods with high fiber are the best calories to ingest.
Weight Awareness: says to (2005-10-4 20:33:49):
Dr. Gage, how do you educate people to identify their behaviors which are detrimentl?
Kmosley says to (2005-10-4 20:35:14):
What is the best way to help a family members children if they are obese? My husbands sisters sons are obese and we are seriously concerned. Any advice?
Dr. Gage says (2005-10-4 20:35:25):
Patients do intensive food records which include more than twelve parameters of lifestyle surrounding such as mood, place of eating, and speed of eating. The patients are then given techniques, most of which are in my book The Thinderella Syndrome and with practice, pattern changes occur, for example, people are able to identify their danger habits and change them
justmat says to Kmosley (2005-10-4 20:36:21):
yeah, my nephew is really overweight!
Dr. Gage says (2005-10-4 20:36:59):
1. Make sure the home environment includes healthy food, healthy exercise and parents should be the mentor. 2. At school, food snacks should be kept healthy. You have to aggressively lobby the school board for this. 3. At play, children should be encouraged to do physically active exercise such as Dance Dance Revolution and not video games.
Kmosley says to (2005-10-4 20:37:22):
I just don't think they understand what will and is happening to their health. We can't seem to get his sister to listen.
mbravo says to (2005-10-4 20:37:52):
its denial
Dr. Gage says (2005-10-4 20:38:35):
It is important to educate the family. Realization as described in my book is the awareness that overweight is a problem. Whether it is because I feel more short of breath or because of alarming medical testing, these will get people more interested and active about doing something about their weight.
Kitkat says (2005-10-4 20:38:38):
they all say that being a little overweight is okay because they will grow out of it
Dr. Gage says (2005-10-4 20:39:22):
Unfortunately, scientific lectures at the NAASO meeting show that youngsters who are overweight have a much higher risk of being unhealthy, obese adults.
Kitkat says (2005-10-4 20:40:0):
i like the school idea
Kmosley says to (2005-10-4 20:40:2):
But they won't. The 13 year old is already short of breath. His mother just doesn't seem that concerned but it's killing us (and unfortunately him)
Kitkat says (2005-10-4 20:40:4):
they eat too much sugar at school
Dr. Gage says (2005-10-4 20:40:49):
Go to your pediatrician and ask for blood test for sugar, Insulin level, and cholesterol. Also ask for a breathing test. This should bring them right back to reality.
Weight Awareness: says to (2005-10-4 20:40:58):
Do you believe in interventions? Dr. Gage.
Dr. Gage says (2005-10-4 20:41:55):
Interventions such as motivators that I describe in my book. For example, modular foods and low calorie formula diets can get patients to at least start a diet, however they should be warned that they still must do a behavioral approach to ultimately be successful.
Kitkat says (2005-10-4 20:42:5):
What is an intervention?
Kmosley says to (2005-10-4 20:42:27):
That is great advice. And I'm going to buy her your book. I just wish I could scare her into a reality check before both boys are hospitalized.
Dr. Gage says (2005-10-4 20:42:42):
It could be something as drastic as weight loss surgery or as simple as drinking a carnation instant breakfast twice a day as a meal substitute.
justmat says (2005-10-4 20:43:23):
can kids understand you book?
Dr. Gage says (2005-10-4 20:44:32):
We have a manual , The THinderella Lifestyle Change Program which is mostly pictorial and easy to understand. It should be a companion to our book. However my 11 yr old daughter successfully read my book without a problem.
Weight Awareness: says to (2005-10-4 20:46:9):
So is your book a self help book or a story book?
Kmosley says to (2005-10-4 20:46:41):
I intend to buy it but does it have shock value to make someone understand how important it is to lose and maintain weight for health? Simple sugestion of better eating habits doesn't seem to work. I think it's to the point that they need to be feared into change.
Dr. Gage says (2005-10-4 20:46:41):
It is mainly self help with real examples of patients who have struggled and conquered obesity.
Weight Awareness: says to (2005-10-4 20:46:54):
Are the readers actively trying to change, or is it an end result of the story.
Dr. Gage says (2005-10-4 20:47:34):
They are actively utilizing the book to change. In fact, many patients have told me they re-read the book several times to enhance the pattern changes they are working on.
justmat says (2005-10-4 20:48:42):
maybe if you tell the kids to read the section on this site about how they will be at risk for other illness if they stay fat. That will scar them!
Kmosley says to (2005-10-4 20:49:4):
Well, that is positive. Maybe If i can get their mother to read it, she can get the boys to seed it!
Kmosley says to (2005-10-4 20:49:32):
I talked to her about this website last night. I hope it helps them.
Weight Awareness: says to (2005-10-4 20:49:49):
can weight loss cure chronic dieases such as diabetis, hypertension, or heart disease?
Dr. Gage says (2005-10-4 20:49:53):
REalization is always a powerful techniques. People are always deniers. The more hands-on information that kids and obese individuals can get, the more likely they are to take action.
Dr. Gage says (2005-10-4 20:50:49):
There is absolutely no doubt that weight loss would get rid of 50 to 60%of type 2 diabetes and dramatically reduce hypertension and heart disease. That's why the government is putting so much money into prevention and awareness.
Weight Awareness: says to (2005-10-4 20:51:38):
what are the 3 rules of nutrition
Kitkat says (2005-10-4 20:52:36):
eat right!, not too much, and not often, LOL
Dr. Gage says (2005-10-4 20:52:38):
My three cardinal rules of nutrition are described in my book, simpley put, 1. white meat better than dark meat 2. unrefined veggie products and refined animal products. 3. If you can do it, have an all-vegetable day
Kmosley says to (2005-10-4 20:53:39):
I'd like them to start with turning off the video games and eating in front of the tv. I'm not sure she even feeds them veggies!
justmat says (2005-10-4 20:53:45):
why an all day veggie day?'
Dr. Gage says (2005-10-4 20:54:11):
It is a great "banking calorie" technique that I describe in my book
Kitkat says (2005-10-4 20:54:19):
my kids would never eat veggies all day
Weight Awareness: says to (2005-10-4 20:54:44):
Can you explain breifly 'banking calories'?
Dr. Gage says (2005-10-4 20:54:49):
If that's all that was in the house, and they didn't have money to order in, they would eventually become hungry enough to eat veggies.
Kmosley says to (2005-10-4 20:55:21):
Great point!
Dr. Gage says (2005-10-4 20:55:30):
Banking calories means if you are on a 1,500 calorie a day diet and eat 1,200 calories a day for three days, you can use up the extra 900 calories saved on the weekend
justmat says (2005-10-4 20:55:32):
that is what we do! no junk food in the house
Weight Awareness: says to (2005-10-4 20:56:11):
So banking allows you to splurge a bit?
Dr. Gage says (2005-10-4 20:56:42):
Yes, if you are too rigid with a diet, you will probably set yourself up for failure. I have used this technique myself for many years.
justmat says (2005-10-4 20:57:9):
so you still count calories?
Kmosley says to (2005-10-4 20:57:33):
Maybe a suggestion (along with the book) of turning off the tv, cooking a meal as a family would be a good start and not seem too pushy.
Dr. Gage says (2005-10-4 20:57:36):
You can count calories, food groups, or portion size. Everybody has a different method for this
LuckyK says to Kmosley (2005-10-4 20:57:49):
I practice what I call calorie budgeting where I uses a reduce or low calorie food if it taste the same as the original version, so that when I want to have something where I don't like the low calorie version or I want a treat, it won't blow my diet
justmat says to LuckyK (2005-10-4 20:58:29):
so in essence you are banking?
Dr. Gage says (2005-10-4 20:58:40):
Exactly
LuckyK says to (2005-10-4 20:58:40):
yes lol
Weight Awareness: says to (2005-10-4 20:59:21):
Dr. Gage, your book has been published for over a year now. Are you thinking of a second edition?
Dr. Gage says (2005-10-4 20:59:33):
I hope all of you are also doing some type of physical activity during the day
Kitkat says (2005-10-4 21:0:0):
I exercise, walk, everday.
LuckyK says to (2005-10-4 21:0:2):
I have a question on that topic..
Dr. Gage says (2005-10-4 21:0:3):
I have a manual for my TLC Program and probably will have a second edition sometime in the year 2006
