NEW YORK, NY (August 31, 2004) -- The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) commends Governor Schwarzenegger for his decision to veto California Senate Bill 1336, which would have allowed dental surgeons to perform cosmetic surgery of the head and neck in their offices.

Arlington Heights, Ill. – The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) applauds Gov. Schwarzenegger’s veto of a bill that would have allowed dental surgeons to perform cosmetic plastic surgery. Schwarzenegger has directed the Dept. of Consumer Affairs to conduct an analysis of the existing training and education requirements for dental and maxillofacial surgeons to assess whether the expansion of their scope of practice would allow them to practice competently and safely.

ASPS Survey Reveals Dramatic Increase In People Seeking Plastic Surgery After Massive Weight Loss [August 5, 2004]
Ninety-four percent of plastic surgeons responding to a survey by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) report that in the past five years the number of people seeking body contouring plastic surgery procedures following massive weight loss (MWL) has dramatically increased in their practices.

With the growing popularity of gastric bypass surgery to treat morbid obesity, plastic surgeons saw an influx of patients in 2003 who had plastic surgery procedures to contour their body after massive weight loss and expect the trend to continue, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). In fact, more than 52,000 body contouring procedures were performed for massive weight loss patients in 2003.
