A calorie restricting diet is a diet based on the principle that when fewer calories are ingested than expended, weight loss occurs. These diets usually rely on foods from all of the food groups. While these diets may severely restrict calories in general, they usually do not severely restrict or promote eating one type of food. A diet that allows the intake of 300 to 500 fewer calories than expended each day is usually considered a healthy diet for the promotion of weight loss.
