Many diets on the market restrict calorie intake and promote and/or restrict certain foods. Some of these diets may be programs where the dieter is encouraged to use food and supplement products supplied by the program in order to achieve maximum weight loss. Again, restricting foods may make a diet nutritionally inadequate if it does not contain the correct balance of vitamins and minerals. Also, a diet that restricts the caloric intake to 300 to 500 calories less than expended each day will usually result in around a 1 pound weight loss each week. 1 to 2 pounds per week is usually considered a healthy weight loss rate for a long term diet.
