Many diets on the market do not rely on counting calories to promote weight loss, but rather rely on what kinds of foods are consumed. Some of these diets restrict entire food groups while encouraging others. Other diets encourage the consumption or restriction of a specific food. Some of these diets even suggest that eating certain foods in specific combinations will promote weight loss. While weight loss on many of these types of diets may be experienced, it may only be short term if it is due to water. Also, many diets that restrict certain foods may be nutritionally imbalanced and can lack important vitamins and minerals.
Several diets that rely on what kinds of foods are consumed severely restrict or forbid carbohydrates. This restriction of carbohydrates can cause the body to enter a state of ketosis where insufficient glucose is available to be converted into energy and the body converts fats into energy instead. During this conversion of fats into energy, molecules called ketones are formed. Because the benefits of ketosis may include rapid weight loss, decreased hunger and increased energy, many diets aim to drive the body into a state of ketosis. Ketosis may also be harmful to the body as well. Ketones may be irritating to the kidneys and because ketones are excreted through the urine kidney stones may occur.
