Daily physical activity is a major component in maintaining a healthy lifestyle for people of all ages. Exercise helps a person control their weight by using excess calories that would otherwise be stored as fat. Even though a large portion of a person's caloric intake is used for baseline (basal) metabolism and processing foods, physical activities can account for as much as 15 to 40 percent of the calories a person uses daily. Without exercising, these extra calories contribute to weight gain. Exercise would promote weight loss. The benefits of fitness and exercise may be enjoyed physically, emotionally and may promote longer life.
