What should be known before using the medication phendimetrazine for weight loss?
Some medicines and/or medical conditions may interact with phendimetrazine. A physician and/or pharmacist should be informed of all prescription and over-the-counter medicines an individual is taking. Phendimetrazine should not be used if the person is also taking any of the following medications: guanadrel, guanethidine, furazolidone, fenfluramine, dexfenfluramine, or monoamine-oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).
If a person has a history of heart conditions, brain or spinal cord disorders, atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, glaucoma, or hyperthyroidism it is not recommended that they use phendimetrazine.
It is unknown if phendimetrazine is excreted in breast milk. Typically if a person is to begin breast feeding while on phendimetrazine, they should check with their physician or pharmacist to discuss the risks to the baby.
What are the directions for taking phendimetrazine for weight loss?
Follow the directions for using phendimetrazine provided by the physician. If the person is taking phendimetrazine in a capsule form, the capsule should be swallowed whole. The capsule form of phendimetrazine should not be broken, crushed, or chewed before swallowing. This will destroy the long action of phendimetrazine and may cause increased side effects.
The usual dose of phendimetrazine is one tablet or capsule before breakfast. Take phendimetrazine on an empty stomach about 30 minutes prior to a meal. If the person is taking phendimetrazine 1 time a day, they should take it in the morning. If phendimetrazine is prescribed to be taken more than once per day, then the last dose of the day should be taken at least 4 to 6 hours before bedtime. Store phendimetrazine at room temperature below 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) in a tightly-closed container and keep it away from light and heat.
What precautions should be taken while using phendimetrazine?
Do not exceed the recommended dose or take phendimetrazine for longer than prescribed without checking with the prescribing physician. Exceeding the recommended dose or taking phendimetrazine for a longer time period than prescribed may cause serious side effects.
Before taking any new medication, either prescription or over-the-counter, a physician or pharmacist should be consulted. All physician and laboratory appointments should be kept while a person is taking phendimetrazine as it usually increases the heart rate and blood pressure.
It is recommended that before a person has any medical or dental treatments, they inform the physician or dentist that they are taking phendimetrazine.
If a person plans on becoming pregnant while they are taking phendimetrazine, they should discuss with their physician the associated benefits and risks of using phendimetrazine during pregnancy.
