A body mass index or BMI higher than 40 is consistent with morbid obesity, it also signifies or implies that the more traditional means of losing weight have failed or are failing. It is in this obesity group and for some obese people with a body mass index or BMI between 35 and 40 (severe obesity), surgery might be a reasonable option to consider.
The body mass index group of 35 and higher will typically have other medical conditions associated with their obesity, that make the surgical procedure option more credible. These other medical conditions are also called comorbidities. These are the severely obese people who have other conditions. An example of the severely obese with comorbidities is, if the person has a body mass index or BMI of 37 but also suffers from severe sleep apnea, diabetes mellitus, or heart problems, then they may benefit from this more aggressive form of treatment to conquer their obesity or morbid obesity even though their body mass index is not 40.
